Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan

Just notice bout this huge typhoon from the news which causes a lot of casualties in Taiwan. This typhoon is definitely the worst typhoon ever hit China.

Typhoon Morakot Causes Great Damages in Taiwan

Typhoon Morakot has crossed Taiwan and weakened to a tropical storm. The powerful typhoon has triggered the island's worst flooding in half a century.

Morakot hit Taiwan late on Friday. Local media captured the dramatic moments as flood waters toppled a hotel building in southern Taiwan. The hotel had been evacuated before its collapse.

Southern Taiwan counties recorded over two hundred centimeters of rain.

Flash flooding washed away a makeshift home in southern Kaohsiung, leaving 16 people missing. Authorities used helicopters to drop food on a mountainous village hit by a massive landslide.

People still remain missing in Taitung county. In Pingtung county, torrential rains stranded four-thousand people in inundated villages.

Officials have set up a special task force to coordinate relief work in the worst-hit southern counties. Rescuers patrolled flooded areas overnight to deliver food and water to residents.

The island's disaster relief center says Morakot has killed 12 people and injured 52. Scores of others are missing and many more are still believed to be trapped.

Typhoon Morakot Causes Havoc In Taiwan

Over the weekend, Typhoon Morakot lashed out at Taiwan island, causing the worst flooding in 50 years.

An entire hotel building in Taitung county was toppled over by flood waters from Typhoon Morakot. It's believed the hotel had been completely evacuated before its collapse. Taiwan's Disaster Relief Center reported that 30,000 residents have been stranded and over 30 people are missing. The Central Weather Bureau said several southern counties recorded more than 80 inches of rain.

Chen Ching-Hsiung, police officer, said, "Well, as far as I know, flood waters are almost reaching to the second floor of all buildings in the flooded area. We will watch for any developments."

Morakot weakens, leaving trail of destruction across E China

FUZHOU, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Morakot weakened to become a tropical storm early Monday after a powerful landing in east China Sunday, causing heavy flooding and grave losses along in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces.

The Zhejiang Meteorological Station announced Monday that Morakot, the eighth and the strongest typhoon in China this year, was slowing and weakening as it is moved northwestward, bringing heavy rain to northern Zhejiang.

In Xiapu, the typhoon's landing point, at least 136,000 people suffered property losses from flooding and landslides caused by Morakot, which packed winds up to 118 km per hour on its arrival.

Zhang Changjian, deputy county head and director of the county's flood control and drought relief headquarters, said the county's agriculture and fishery industries had been severely battered, with direct losses estimated at 200 million yuan (29 million U.S. dollars).

He said 14 townships were flooded, and eight roads were blocked by floods and landslides.

Xie Xiaoping, manager of the Xiapu Power Co. Ltd., said staff had been working around the clock to ensure power supplies, but some villages saw short blackouts.

A total of 155 passenger vessel sailings were cancelled and more than 48,000 vessels were recalled to port in Fujian, where 505,000 people were evacuated from their homes as authorities raised the typhoon alarm to a red alert, its highest level, Sunday.

Wenzhou City, in Zhejiang, reported the first death in the typhoon on Sunday after three adults and a 4-year-old boy were buried when the torrential rain brought five houses down. After they were rescued, the boy died, according to the city's flood-control headquarters.

In Zhejiang, more than 3.4 million people suffered property losses as hundreds of villages were flooded and more than 1,800 houses collapsed, according to the Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.

In Cangnan, one of 20 flooded counties in Zhejiang, vehicles left parked on main roads were submerged in a meter of water.

The National Meteorological Center said violent rainstorms would continue in south Jiangsu, southeast Anhui, northeast Jiangxi, Shanghai, most parts of Zhejiang and Fujian, and Taiwan over Monday.

The center issued the highest alert at 6 p.m. Sunday in response to expected rainstorms in these regions, advising people to stop work outdoors, and urging authorities to clear drainage channels in cities and villages.

The center also warned of possible flooding near Taihu Lake, Jiangsu Province, as downpours reached 100 to 130 mm.

The West Lake in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang, was closed Sunday, and navigation along the Qiantang River, one of its tributaries, stopped.

TAIWAN'S LOSSES

Typhoon Morakot also brought great losses to Taiwan. According to the island's disaster response center, Morakot had killed 12 people and injured 52, while 32 were still missing as of Monday.

Taiwan's meteorological department lifted the typhoon alert at 10 a.m., but continued to forecast rainstorms in the area south of Miaoli County.

Although typhoon Morakot has left Taiwan, the weather conditions on Monday remained unstable and some mountainous areas might have very heavy rainstorms, landslide and flooding, the forecast said.

The mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) expressed sympathy to the Taiwan people who suffered from the typhoon via the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).

The mainland was deeply concerned with the great losses in Taiwan and conveyed condolences and hoped the Taiwan people could resume normal living and working conditions as soon as possible, said a letter from the ARATS to the SEF on Monday.

Friday Outing

Fri, 7th August, '09
Went out with Renae and Jane to PC Fair. Since it's Friday noon, there wasn't so many people yet. Reach there around 3pm because of Jane. She really know how to take her own sweet time getting ready (>__<). Don't even allow us to had our lunch first while waiting for her. Say wanna go eat with us but me and Nae ended up eating together in the end. After PC Fair, went down to Gurney for our late lunch which is around 5pm already at that time. After eating, we walk over to Gurney Plaza to meet Siaw Ping, Juin, Wei Ping, Hui Ping, Chia Ming and Jane before they go for their 5.45pm Harry Potter movie.

Reach back home at 7pm because of traffic jam. Was relaxing already after cleaning up. Then all of a sudden Wee Kiat called to go over to Sunway. I was so shock because i thought they are already on their way to Sunway without me since i reached back home so late. Quickly get changed and went down to meet them. This time Han Khoon was driving the car. Wow... his driving... I almost got heart attack sitting inside the car. Anyway manage to reach Sunway SAFELY at around 8pm plus. Meet up with Yen Nee and Stella at Sunway. After waiting for awhile, Will Pang arrive. OMG, he is such a cutie especially when he smile. The real person is definitely so damn good looking compare to the poster of him. Anyway manage to get a few snapshot of him. After that, we went for our late dinner. Sit there and chat for about an hour till 11pm before we say our goodbyes and went home. This time it's Wee Kiat that's driving. This time i was begging for Han Khoon to drive back. Talking about fast driving... how fast do ya think he's driving for him to get me back home at 11.30pm??!!! SUPER FAST OF COZ!!! gosh... anyway maybe because of his driving speed also, i manage to get back on time before my mom called. Haha. Dunno whether to thank him or to scold him also for driving so damn fast. lolx

Wen Ye's Birthday

Thurs, 30th July, '09
Today is Wen Ye's aka "CHICKEN LITTLE" birthday. Went to class today as usual. After class me, Yen Nee, CHai Yong, TIng Wei, Han Khoon, Wee Kiat aka "BIG KID", Chee Cin, Yong Hong, Lip Fong, Ying Xin together with the birthday girl went for pizza. On the way there, I stop by Maxim to buy a birthday cake for her. (ps:dun go but cake from Maxim... it really had a bad texture to it. The cake was kinda hard to swallow. Anyway it was my first time buying a cake from Maxim... really give me a bad impression on that shop.) Oh well, next stop is PIZZA HUT~!! yeah.. at last manage satisfy my desire for pizza... manage to get a taste of pizza after such long time. I think the last time i had pizza was when i went out with PC for the forest gathering.. Sat there and chat for like an hour after we had our meal. Before we went back, was shock to see a small accident just outside pizza hut. Really pity that car owner. (If i'm not mistaken, a motorcyclist was riding very fast and couldn't manage to stop when he was turning and crash into another motorcyclist. Luckily nobody was hurt during that incident. However that car next to it got some "tattoo" on it.~!! haha... thank god i didn't park over there.)
